Temporary email vs email alias: which should you use?
By Mailiffy Team · October 10, 2026
If you care about privacy, you have probably come across two popular tools: temporary email addresses and email aliases. Both let you avoid giving out your real address, and both help reduce spam. They are not the same thing, though, and choosing the right one depends on what you are signing up for.
What is a temporary email?
A temporary email, often called temp mail or a 10 minute email, is a standalone inbox that lives for a short time. You do not create an account and nothing is forwarded to your real mailbox. Messages arrive in the temporary inbox itself, and when the timer ends the address and its contents are deleted.
On Mailiffy, an inbox starts with 10 minutes and can be extended to a maximum of 60 minutes. It is receive-only, needs no sign-up, and leaves nothing behind once it expires.
What is an email alias?
An email alias is an extra address that forwards to your existing inbox. You might create a different alias for every shop, newsletter, or app you use. Mail sent to the alias appears in your normal mailbox, and you can usually reply from the alias too. If one alias starts receiving spam, you disable it without affecting the others.
Aliases are offered by some email providers and by dedicated alias services. They typically require an account, and they are designed to last as long as you want them.
Key differences
Lifespan: a temporary email lasts minutes; an alias lasts as long as you keep it.
Setup: a temporary email needs no account at all; an alias requires an account with a provider.
Where mail goes: a temporary email keeps messages in its own short-lived inbox; an alias forwards them into your real mailbox.
Account recovery: with a temporary email you cannot recover accounts later, because the inbox is gone; with an alias, password resets keep reaching you.
Identity: a temporary email has no link to you; an alias is ultimately connected to your real mailbox through the alias provider.
When a temporary email is the better choice
Use a disposable email address when you need something once and never again: a download link, a coupon code, a single verification email, a Wi-Fi login, or a quick test of a sign-up form. In these cases forwarding is pointless, and an inbox that cleans itself up is exactly what you want. You also do not need to trust an extra provider with a permanent link to your real address.
When an alias is the better choice
Use an alias for any account you plan to keep: online shopping, subscriptions, social networks, forums, or services that send receipts and security alerts. You will want to receive password resets and important notices for months or years, and an alias lets you do that while still keeping your real address hidden and easy to protect.
Can you use both?
Absolutely, and many privacy-minded people do. A practical rule of thumb: if you would be upset to lose access to the account, use an alias or your real address. If you would not even remember the site next week, use a temporary email. Combining both keeps your main inbox clean and makes leaks easy to spot.
